Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1928, Gabor Szilasi has been living in Montreal, Quebec since1959. Working as a photographer with the Office du Film Quebec, he became familiar with the regions of rural Quebec. In the documentary mode of photographing people within their own environment, he used both a 35mm Leica camera as well as the more traditional 4x5 inch view camera.
In 1971 he started teaching phtography at the College du Vieux Montreal and in 1980 he became professor of photography in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University, Montreal continuing to teach there until his retirement in 1995.
He has also been visiting professor at Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, Poland in 1990 and Stanford University, California in 1991, 1993, and 1995. In addition to documenting rural Quebec szilasi has been persistently photographing his adopted city of Montreal, its streets, architecture as well as people.
In 1980 he began to return to his native city of Budapest to renew friendships and photograph familiar people and places. His photographs have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., France, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Portugal.
He's presently working on a series of portraits for the 40th annyversary of the Cinematheque quebecoise as well as preparing an exhibition for the Hungarian Museum of Photography in Budapest.
